Summers Speaks at CFR on Economic Policy

President Barack Obama’s director of the National Economic Council, Larry Summers, spoke at the Council on Foreign Relations on June 12. At the time of this writing, a video and a transcript were both available at the CFR website. The stated purpose was to present his “Reflections on Economic Policy in Time of Crisis,” but the theme seemed to be saving the free market from having too much freedom. He even credited socialist economist John Maynard Keynes with the “great insight” that the free market will supposedly fail to achieve a natural balance between supply and demand “two or three times a century, perhaps a little more.”

As a 20-year member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Summers definitely chose the right venue to make these stark declarations. The CFR has been around since 1921, and its roster of former and current members reads like a who’s who of government and business. Though the group styles itself as an independent, nonpartisan think tank and publisher dedicated to creating a better understanding of America’s foreign policy choices, it primarily focuses on promoting socialistic, international solutions to problems at the expense of U.S. national interests. Diehard members in high positions, like Summers, are notorious for carrying this to extremes.
