Can you see how well the "public" 'gets it' from the comments below, Mr. Chertoff? I don't know what the people have against this? It would be just like Nazi Germany: Papers, please! We could all prove we're "legal" Americans and if the ID has an RFID chip, we could be tracked in case we, you know, get lost or are kidnapped (not by the gov't/batteries not included)We'd all feel so much safer from the terrorism Bush invented. Those Muslims dropping cluster bombs & killing a million civilians.

This is ridiculous and this guys excuses are weak. How is anyone going to be know the difference between a fake i.d. and a real one? The problem will still exist. This is a trojan horse. The real goal is to track people. If they chip drivers licenses then you have to have it on you all the time which means they will be able to track you ALL THE TIME! With the Amero coming and the N. American trade union we are going the border issue will be irrelevant so what's the REAL reason?!
