Hiding the Truth about Terrorism
The trial of suspected Al Qaeda operative, Jose Padilla, has begun with some interesting twists.
Padilla was arrested at the Chicago airport in 2002 accused of plotting to detonate a radioactive “dirty bomb” in the US. During his incarceration in a Navy brig for three-and-a-half years, the government has decided to drop those charges and only pursue a charge of supporting terrorism.
Nowhere in the 40-page indictment is there any mention of the charges leveled against Padilla when he was arrested at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in May 2002. Then-U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft alleged that agents had thwarted a plot between Padilla, 36, and top al-Qaida figures to detonate a radioactive “dirty bomb” or blow up apartment buildings in American cities.
The allegation that Padilla was part of a plot to detonate a dirty bomb was dropped in November 2005, when the Pentagon transferred him out of a military brig in Charleston, S.C.
It’s thought the reason for dropping the more serious charge of detonating a “dirty bomb” is because the U.S. Government does not want certain facts about the case aired in public court. It’s difficult to get at the truth here because federal prosecuters are being tight lipped and reporters have been banned from asking routine questions of defense lawyers or federal prosecutors at the trial.

Padilla Found Guilty on All Counts in Terror Case
Washington Post
Thursday, August 16, 2007; 4:08 PM
Jose Padilla, the Brooklyn-born former street gang member arrested five years ago as a suspected terrorist, was convicted today by a federal jury in Miami along with two co-defendants on charges of supporting al-Qaeda and other violent Muslim extremist groups.
They were found guilty on all three counts against them: conspiracy to murder, maim and kidnap as part of a terrorist campaign overseas, conspiracy to provide material support for terrorism and providing material support for terrorism. The three face life in prison for their conviction on the first count and 15 years for each of the other two counts.
