Bill Approved To Create Massive Surveillance Database Of Internet Users

Legislation that will force Internet providers to store information on all their customers and share it with the federal government and law enforcement agencies was significantly beefed at the last minute yesterday and approved by a U.S. House of Representatives committee.

Obama Signs PATRIOT Act Extension

On Thursday, Congress passed a four year extension of the PATRIOT Act. Lawmakers rejected all attempts to moderate aspects of the legislation that weaken the Fourth Amendment.

Obama used an auto pen machine from France to sign the extension. Provisions of the PATRIOT Act were set to expire at midnight.

Ron Paul explains why he is opposed to the “compromise” FISA wiretap bill (June ordering online 20):

Mr. Speaker, I regret that due to the unexpected last-minute appearance of this measure on the legislative calendar this week, a prior commitment has prevented me from voting on the FISA amendments. I have strongly opposed every previous FISA overhaul attempt and I certainly would have voted against this one as well.

House Democrats were unsuccessful in seeking a 21 day extension to the Protect America Act, the legislation underpinning the government’s controversial warrantless wiretapping program.

The vote was 229 against 191 to extend the Act while lawmakers negotiated a deal on its replacement.

Within hours after the September 11 attacks, the FBI began serving search warrants to major Internet Service Providers to get information about suspected electronic communications. Within a week, police and FBI agents received tips that some suspects used libraries in Hollywood Beach and Delray Beach, Florida. FBI agents have since requested computer sign-in lists from other libraries. President Bush signed the USA PATRIOT Act into law on October 26, 2001. This law is expected to greatly increase the number of requests for sign-in lists at libraries.
