A Few Potential Effects Of Genetically Modified Foods
Genetically modified foods are a subject of much debate in our current world. Some nations are pro GMOs and some nations are strongly against. Genetically modified foods are not merely a matter of preference of one type of food over another, some people are becoming worried that the supply of food is going to eventually become irreversibly changed.
Some companies are genetically modifying their crops so as to keep them from the ability to reproduce seeds. These “terminator seeds” as they have been called, are only able to produce one year’s worth of food. They don’t make seeds to plant new crops. What’s the point of that, you ask? That’ s a good que stion. It’s mostly business. If a farmer can’t create seed for replanting, he has to keep going to the seed company year on year to purchase more seed.
That is the major point of it. But try to imagine for a second if all farmers were using seed that couldn’t replicate itself. What if there were a disaster and the seed were not available anymore. We would have no crops left. We would be facing worldwide starvation.
That is the reason why so many have become outraged. Just to make two bucks, food corporations have begun to alter the nation’s food system in doubtless threatening ways and to indebt farmers into their product. There is increasing concern that GMOs will finally lead to a nationwide food crisis.
Others are strong supporters of genetically modified foods, arguing that through alteration, GMOs have the capability to feed the entire world. While that argument does have some importance, it must be noted that there’s already enough resources to feed the entire world without GMOs. Our government pays farmers not to grow crops in an effort to subsidize them. The reason why the world is still hungry is more due to oppressive governments and controlling warlords who would not allow food to the poor in their countries regardless of whether supplies were airlifted in.
Genetically modified foods pros and cons have to be weighed carefully, so that mankind can come to a general agreement about how to proceed. If you’re interested in food and health, check out the new research on acid alkaline balance in the body.
